The American Locomotive Company built the first 4-8-4 in 1927 for Northern Pacific Railroad. It was the ultimate wheel
configuration for the modern steam locomotive. The pony truck gave the best stability for riding and tracking, and the
trailing truck supported a larger firebox that allowed extra boiler capacity and maximum steam levels.
Our spectacular 1 1/2" scale 4-8-4 Northern is tremendous. With its classic lines, huge boiler and spectacular riveted
tender, this locomotive will astound you.
Without a doubt, this is Mason's Trains largest, most impressive, and undeniably
awesome live steam locomotive of all time!
