OVERNIGHT TRIP REVIEW
On July 19th the overnight bus trip left Mason's Train Emporium. Everyone arrived bright
and early, and were raring to go. The bus was comfy and cool. With the hot, hot weather,
air conditioning was a must.
Our first stop was at Hell's Gate. Most of us rode the air tram down to the river, but
there were a few adventurous folks who braved the footpath. Almost all of us live in the
Fraser Valley, but it's been a while since many had been here. For some it was the first
visit ever. The views were breathtaking, the historical information was interesting, and
the visit was fun.
Once again in the air-conditioned comfort of the bus, we pushed on to Kamloops. Our rooms
at the Plaza Hotel were very nice, and the staff was fabulous.
There was just time for a nice rest, and then back onto the bus for the short trip to
ride the Spirit of Kamloops.
Built in 1912, this 90-year-old 2-8-0 Consolidated has been lovingly restored and
maintained. The crew of engineer, conductor and porters were friendly and informative, and
it was a beautiful evening to ride in the open-air cars.
The real fun was the hold-up. I
never thought I'd use the words "fun" and "hold-up" in the same sentence, but when those
train robbers rode up on their horses I almost clapped my hands with delight.
What a great ride, I highly recommend it!
Day one was great, and we all had loads of fun.
Day two began with an early departure for historical O'Keefe Ranch. This place is
amazing. Everything from beautifully restored buildings to antique farm machinery, to
farm animals, and, of course, the huge model railway display. Another highly recommended
place to check out.
Our next, and last, stop was Summerland and the cherished Kettle Valley Steam Railway. This
old Shay engine, built in 1924, is a marvel to watch. Slow & steady, boasting enormous power, we
chugged along the beautiful Okanagan countryside. We also toured the engine shop and got a good
look at the 2-8-0, #3716. Again, the weather was perfect, and we couldn't have
asked for a better end to our adventure than this!
